Cultural Studies

In the academic year 1998/99, the Institute of Polish Culture opened a full-time, five-year master's programme in cultural studies encompassing the following fields: the history of modern Polish culture, the sociology and anthropology of contemporary culture, the history and theory of theatre, the history and theory of film and audiovisuality. The programme of "Cultural studies" is composed of classes and lectures, it lasts nine semesters, and includes the following segments: ""Antropology of culture", "Antropology of word", "Anthropology of performance", "Film and audiovisuality in culture". The programme is complemented by seminars given by members and associates of the Institute of Polish Culture. The following is a sample list of seminar topics: the anthropology of every-day life, the sociology of books and reading, the anthropology of theatre, traditions of Polish theatre, the international history of film, problems of multimedia. Additionally, Cultural Studies students have classes in the history of Polish culture, ancient traditions and the history of culture (especially as regards the cultures of neighbouring nations), as well as additional humanities subjects (philosophy, sociology, psychology). Students are required to pass two foreign language examinations. The programme ends with a master's seminar offered by one of the following four Departments of the Institute: the department of Modern Polish Culture, the Department of Contemporary Culure, the Department of Theatre and Performance, the Department of Film and Audiovisual Arts). In the third year, Cultural studies students can start the specialisation "Culture animation", which is noted on their diplomas.
