The journal was established in 1994 by researchers specialising in occasional literature from the times of the Confederation of Bar, headed by prof. Janusz Maciejewski. It was meant as a forum for interdisciplinary discussions between historians and theorists of literature, linguists, sociologists and historians, devoted mainly to texts which could be classified as either belles-lettres or popular folk literature, the circumstances which led to their creation and spread and that shaped their reception. The journal is published annually and contains discussions of literary phenomena, commented editions of old texts, as well as overviews of related fields of study. For the last several years, the journal has been divided into uniform thematic sections and has often published papers from conferences co-organised by the Section of Occasional and Applied Literature of the Institute of Polish Literature at University of Warsaw and the Institute of Literary Research at Polish Academy of Sciences.

Prof. dr hab. Janusz Maciejewski is Editor-in-chief of the journal, and dr Jacek Wójcicki serves as Secretary. The editorial board includes also: prof. dr hab. Stanisław Dubisz, prof. dr hab. Janusz Tazbir, dr Wojciech Kaliszewski, dr Zofia Rejman, dr Katarzyna Sałkiewicz. "Napis" is published by the publishing house "DiG".
