"Baroque. History - Literature - Art"

The interdisciplinary half-yearly "Barok. Historia - Literatura - Sztuka" [Baroque. History - Literature - Art] is an international journal established in 1994. "Barok" [Baroque] is one of the most important contemporary interdisciplinary specialist journals devoted to questions of - broadly understood - history of culture (that is the history of literature, art, music, philosophy, among others), which focuses on the Baroque era in Poland, as well as in Europe.

The editors of the journal are specialists associated with University of Warsaw (from the Institute of Polish Literature, the Institute of History, the Institute of Art History, the Institute of Scientific Information and Bibliological Studies and the Institute of Musicology). The editorial board is currently composed of the following members: prof. dr hab. Janusz Pelc - Editor-in-Chief, prof. dr hab. Urszula Augustyniak, prof. dr hab. Paulina Buchwald-Pelcowa, prof. dr hab. Juliusz A. Chrościcki, prof. dr hab. Irena Poniatowska, prof. dr hab. Marek Prejs, prof. dr hab. Adam Karpiński, dr Tadeusz Bernatowicz, mgr Jacek Głażewski - Secretary. The editorial committee includes: prof. dr hab. Urszula Augustyniak (Warsaw), prof. dr hab. Andrzej Borowski (Cracow), prof. dr hab. Paulina Buchwald-Pelcowa (Warsaw), prof. dr hab. Juliusz A. Chrościcki (Warsaw) - Vice-Chair, prof. dr hab. Lech Kalinowski (Cracow), prof. dr hab. Mariusz Karpowicz (Warsaw), prof. dr hab. Edmund Kotarski (Gdańsk), prof. dr hab. Janusz Pelc (Warsaw) - Chair, prof. dr hab. Irena Poniatowska (Warsaw), prof. dr hab. Marek Prejs (Warsaw), prof. dr hab. Andrzej Rottermund (Warsaw), prof. dr hab. Jan Seredyka (Opole), prof. dr hab. Jacek Staszewski (Toruń), prof. dr hab. Zygmunt M. Szweykowski (Cracow), prof. dr hab. Janusz Tazbir (Warsaw), prof. dr hab. Andrzej Kajetan Wróblewski (Warsaw).

"Barok" has published research papers by some of the greatest specialists in history, history of literature, art history, philosophy, musicology and bibliology - researchers associated with academic centres in Poland and most other European countries (Great Britain, Italy, France, Germany, Russia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Byelorussia, among others). It has to be emphasized that "Barok" has been a journal of many generations: it has given numerous young researchers an opportunity to publish their first scholarly papers.

The aim of the editorial team of the journal is to devote each issue to a specific research topic. Each issue is divided into the following sections: "Rozprawy i eseje" [Research papers and essays], "Inedita i problemy ineditów" [Inedita and problems of inedita], "Problemy i dyskusje wokół wystaw" [Problems and discussions of exhibitions], "Omówienia i przeglądy" [Overviews and surveys], "Recenzje i noty" [Reviews and notes], "Kronika naukowa" [Scientific chronicle], "Kronika Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego" [University of Warsaw chronicle]). In the last few years, the following interesting topics (among many others) were discussed in "Barok": "The history of humanism in the Baroque era", "Problems of court culture", "The world of emblems and allegories", "Baroque in the era of the Saxon kings", "The Baroque world of wars and turmoil". The forthcoming issues will be devoted to issues such as the question of baroque religiousness and, sarmatism. The journal has also broadened the range of its activities by promoting and supporting young talented researchers - in 1999, the Editorial Board of "Barok" and the publishing company NERITON (the publisher of the journal) announced a competition for the best doctoral dissertation devoted to the Baroque era. This initiative will be continued in the future.
