TRADITION AND PERSPECTIVES

History and tradition

The history of the Faculty of Polish Studies in Warsaw is closely connected to the history of the university, beginnings of which date back to 1820s. The university was established thanks to the men of letters: Stanisław Kostka Potocki and Stanisław Staszic. A few prominent poets can be found also among the lecturers  (including Kazimierz Brodziński and Ludwik Osiński), as well as a great lexicographer Samuel Bogumił Linde.

For the first three decades of the 20th century many distinguished UW professors lectured at the Faculty of History and Philology. Among them we may find Jan Baudouin de Courtenay, Stanisław Szober, Witold Doroszewski, Józef Ujejski, Juliusz Kleiner, Wacław Borowy, Julian Krzyżanowski, Zofia Szmydtowa, Tadeusz Zieliński, Kazimierz Kumaniecki and Adam Krokiewicz.

It is impossible to list all the names of outstanding scholars in the postwar history of the Faculty. These were linguists, literary scholars, classical philologists, slavists and cultural experts, all making considerable contributions to Polish culture and science.

Our students

The fortunes of the faculty and the University of Warsaw have been as turbulent and dramatic as the history of Poland. Despite the long break in functioning enforced by the events of the 19th century, the need for organizing underground education during World War II and the turmoil of postwar years – the Faculty of Polish Studies in Warsaw educated numerous generations of graduates, many of whom became poets, writers, journalists and politicians.

The list of eminent figures includes Jan Lechoń, Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński, Tadeusz Gajcy, Andrzej Trzebiński and Tadeusz Borowski. In the last decades of the 20th century many of our students became prominent artists: Wojciech Młynarski, Maciej Zembaty, Magda Umer, Jacek Kaczmarski, Muniek Staszczyk and the members of Kabaret Moralnego Niepokoju studied at our faculty as well.

Polish Studies in the 21st century

The Faculty of Polish Studies is at present one of the largest philological faculties in Poland, keeping the top spots in national universities ranking. Addressing students' and employers' expectations we continue to expand the fields of study and specialisations offer. The courses led at the faculty prepare graduates for professional work not only at schools and academies, but also in the media and various cultural institutions.

Various branches of modern humanities are represented at the faculty by distinguished scholars. Our lecturers participate in international academic life, cooperate with the largest publishers in the country and work as experts in television and radio programmes. They are also authors of dictionaries and handbooks.

There are numerous student organizations at the faculty, actively enhancing student life. These are the Student Council, Student Theatre (Teatr Polonistyki UW im. Eligiusza Szymanisa) and many scientific circles. There is also a student web portal Niewinni-czarodzieje.pl working in association with the faculty, allowing students to publish their texts and realise professional practice.
